What is your meaning of life and what will you reflect on in your twilight years?

My late father-in-law was one of those amazing human beings who at 95 years of age, still had that twinkle in his eye, that humour in his words and peace in his heart.

We had many chats over the years, and I found myself asking him one day, what was his secret? The secret of his emotional agility, his sense of contentment which was unwavering and his perspective of life? I was curious to understand how he travelled through life, what changes he made within himself and how he came to be who he was.

We have all met someone that we aspire to be – whether it is a man or women – for me, I always love spending time with those individuals that have experienced life and have many, many years of history to reflect on. What we think is important when we are young may change when we are older…and those lessons in life are invaluable.

Perhaps we could give us ‘young ones’ a few tips on what we may consider adopting and applying into our lives now, to bring us a little closer to that sense of contentment and inner peace.

Mine - well, that is easy to see...spending more time with my puppy Tilly!

A few tips:

Whilst loving parents, siblings, spouses, children and friends, make sure that loving yourself is top of the list

Realising you are not the world “Atlas”. The world does not rest on your shoulders

Stop bargaining with vegetable & fruit vendors. A few cents here or there is not going to break the bank, but it might help the person save for their son or daughter’s school fees

Leave the waitress a big tip. The extra money might bring a smile to her face. She is working really hard for a living and I have enough to meet my needs

Stop telling the elderly that they've already told that story many times. The story makes them walk down memory lane & relive their past

Learn not to correct people even when you quietly know they are wrong. The onus of making everyone perfect is not on us. Peace is more precious than perfection and everyone is entitled to their truth, their beliefs...you don't need to 'sell' them your version

Give compliments freely & generously. Compliments are a mood enhancer not only for the recipient, but also for you! And a small tip for the recipient of a compliment, never, NEVER turn it down, just say "Thank You”

Don’t bother about a crease or a spot on your dress or shirt. Personality speaks louder than appearances – how you make people feel is a lasting legacy

Walk away from people who don't value you. They might not know your worth, but you certainly do

Remain cool when someone plays dirty to outrun you in the rat race. You are not a rat & neither are you participating in any race

Do not be embarrassed by your emotions. It’s your emotions that make you human and being authentic to your truth is a powerful antidote to pressure of pretending – just be you!

It's better to drop the ego than to break a relationship. Ego keep’s you aloof, whereas with relationships, you will never be alone

Live each day as if it's the last. Be present, mindful and embrace all that this day has to offer…enjoy!

Do what makes you happy. Be responsible for your happiness, you owe it to yourself. Happiness is a choice. You can be happy at any time, just choose to be! Why do we have to wait to be 60 or 70 or 80, why can't we practice this at any stage and age?

Take ownership of you and make choices that make you feel better

Do more of what is good for you and less of what is not

Tune into a new you - let's find that pathway of least resistance in your life, and make every day count.
